Winter Park Express: Affordable Train to Colorado’s Slopes is Back with Expanded Service for 2025
The beloved Winter Park Express is making a return for the 2025 season, bringing back its scenic and convenient route from Denver’s Union Station to Winter Park Resort. With fares starting at just $19, this year’s service offers more accessibility, additional seating, and even an added stop to make traveling to the mountains easier and more sustainable.
Expanded Service and New Stop in Fraser
In response to high demand, the 2025 season will feature 69 round trips, 29 more than in the previous year. Starting January 9, 2025, the Winter Park Express will operate five days a week, from Thursday through Monday, extending through March 31. For holiday travelers, special services are scheduled from December 20-22 and December 27-29, providing more options during peak times.
This season, the train will also include a stop at the Fraser platform, located just five miles west of Winter Park Resort. This new stop opens up convenient access for Fraser residents and offers another point for skiers and snowboarders to hit the slopes.
Increased Capacity for a Better Experience
To accommodate the growing popularity of the Winter Park Express, Amtrak is adding two more passenger cars, increasing seating from 268 to approximately 402 seats per trip. This expanded capacity allows more passengers to enjoy the journey while reducing the stress on other modes of transport, like cars and buses, especially on busy ski weekends.
A More Affordable and Scenic Journey
Winter Park Resort President Sky Foulkes highlighted the train’s appeal, calling it a “beloved tradition” for Colorado residents and global visitors alike. Foulkes noted that the Winter Park Express offers an enjoyable and scenic alternative to driving, with views of the Rockies from the comfort of the train. The train not only reduces the need for personal vehicles but aligns with sustainable travel initiatives by offering a greener way to access the mountains.
Support from Colorado Leaders
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Executive Director Shoshana Lew shared her enthusiasm for the train, especially on heavy ski days when traffic is notoriously challenging. “The Winter Park Express offers a great option to take a relaxing, affordable trip,” said Lew, emphasizing the train’s role in easing mountain commutes and supporting eco-friendly travel.
Governor Jared Polis also praised the expanded service and reduced ticket prices, stating, “With expanded service and lower costs, Coloradans can save time and money on our way to enjoying our great outdoors.” Polis highlighted that this season’s 43% price reduction is part of Colorado’s commitment to making mountain adventures more accessible.
Convenient Schedule for Skiers and Snowboarders
The train departs Denver at 7 a.m., reaching Winter Park Resort by 9 a.m. This early arrival time provides a full day to enjoy Winter Park’s diverse outdoor activities. The return trip departs the resort at 4:30 p.m., bringing passengers back to Denver around 6:40 p.m. Skis and snowboards can be brought aboard at no additional charge, making it simple for travelers to bring their gear.
How to Book Your Trip
Tickets are available through Amtrak’s website, with fares ranging from $19 to $39 one way. Families benefit from discounted fares, with children aged 2 to 12 eligible for half-off rates, making the Winter Park Express an affordable choice for group outings and family trips.
